Cow Families at Poplar Park

Poplar Park has a long history of keeping cow family names with some stretching back far in time and some being more recent.  Over the years cow families can disappear but they still leave an impact on the herd with their years of hard work.

Heroine

The original Heroine came to Poplar Park when Norman Brown purchased Gemvale Maj Heroine from Don Murphy. They have gone on to be one of our most influential cow families. The calf that Maj Heroine was carrying was the first Highfield Irish Mist calf born in Canada- Poplar Park Misty Heroine. She went on to be a great producing cow and was the main reason why we used Highfield Irish Mist so heavily through AI.  Heroines are very popular with our buyers.

Florence

The Florence family at Poplar Park was started with the purchase of Colehil Florence from Jack Wright, a neighbor and good friend of Norman Brown. The original Florence goes back to Ridgeview Florence from the Killoh brothers. Florence's have become a mainstay in our herd with several females around still. JT Titan 3T along with many other notable bulls were progeny off JT Florence 5N.

Clipper

The Clipper's are one of the oldest cow families in North America.  They originally came from a heifer that Norman Brown purchased in Ontario, Oakfield Clipper Jewel 8th-400154 from Edmund J Murphy.  Poplar Park Extender 7X and JT Grissom 43G are both noted herd bulls we have used with great success that come from Clipper dams.  This is a 75+ year old cow line at Poplar Park

Muffin

The Muffins originally came from the Scottsmorr herd that went back to the famed Four Point herd of Elmer Berg. The purchased female from was Scottsmorr Matchless Muffin.  This is another cow family who has been in the herd for 50+ years and has been sold to many herds across the county.  Our Muffins are fantastic cows.

Goldie

This cow family also originated from the Colehil herd with Colehil Goldie 14G. The Goldie's in Jack's herd were originally from the Blythesome cow line. They have become an integral part of our herd. JT Goldie 3P by Muridale Buster was a herd matron who produced walking sires on the farm Including JT Shaker and JT Ultrawash 30U.  In her older age she was flushed to Highfield Irish Mist and the resulting females have been very positive for us. This is another 50+ year old cow line at Poplar Park.

Daisy

The final cow family that came from the Colehil herd was Colehil Daisy 17E. Jack had Aberfeldy Daisy 5th-432768.  The Daisy's are easy fleshing, hard working cows that thrive in tough conditions.  A noteable female in this line is JT Daisy 99K, a horned female who worked for many years living to a ripe age.

Claudia

The Claudia line came to the farm with the purchase of Renosa Claudia from The George Gleggett herd. They go back to Stockwell Claudia who was one of the most impressive cows John has ever seen.  You can see the Claudia influence in many herds across Western Canada.

Betsy

The Betsy's originated from the Scottsmorr herd when we aquired Scottsmor Roan Betsy. She produced to a very ripe age of 19 still in good shape and nursing her calf when she met her end through an accident.  Roan Betsy was the mother of Poplar Park Mist 4R who was a prolific sire at Poplar Park and then went on to work in 2 other herds breeding past 12 years old.  Mist 4R is still used through AI today.  There are Betsy's working in our herd along with many other herds in Canada.  As Richard Moellenbeck from Bell M Shorthorns put it  "everyone needs a Betsy"

Brenda

Brenda's came to Poplar Park with the purchase of Huberdale B B Brenda 35Z.  They have since become an important cow family here. Known for their shape and depth they can handle the tough Manitoba winters.  A descendant JT Brenda 79D is one of our top cows.

Promise

The Promise cow line was brought in with Glenford Promise 20E and actually goes back to the Huberdale Princess line.  This line is was a major foundation for Russell.

Myrtle

This a newer foundation line added through 2 embryos purchased through Grant Alexander of Horseshoe Creek Shorthorns.  Both embryos off the famous Saskvalley Myrtle 83N.  These produced RT Diamond Cutter 49D who bred well for us and is still breeding in another herd at 9 years old.  He has left some powerful females.  The embryos also produced RT Myrtle 46D and this line has steadily been increasing with very good females.

Missie

Another relatively new foundation line to Poplar Park, Russell purchased Bell M Missie 127D bred by Arnold Moellenbeck. Her sire Bell M Martin 11Y was an impressive bull.  The Missie cow has done well through our winter program while staying fertile and in shape.
